Horse carriage shaped cake tin This is not as difficult as it appears! The cake is baked in a carriage shaped cake tin and then decorated with butter icing plus a little ready mixed and coloured fondant icing. Whilst some of the icing does need to be piped it doesn't have to be too precise! See our simple instructions to make a carriage birthday cake below for more details.
Pony birthday cake tin
This is the tin that makes the pony shaped cake above. Creating an impressive pony shaped birthday cake I used a 6oz/3 egg Victoria sandwich mix and my technique is to cream the butter and sugar til it's well mixed together and really smooth, then add the eggs and beat the mixture quite hard, lifting it up to get as much air in as possible. Finally, fold in the sieved flour until the mixture is smooth. To ensure the cake comes out of the tin in one piece, I buttered the tin, added a little flour and tapped it around the tin until all the butter had a layer of flour over it. Once cooked and cooled I sifted some dry icing sugar over the whole cake, then made up some pink icing with a fairly stiff consistency and covered the mane, tail, and hooves, with a 'blob' for the eye on which I then added a couple of pink cake decorations. Simple instructions to make a carriage cake I used a 8oz/4 egg Victoria sandwich mix and my technique is to cream the butter and sugar til it's well mixed together and really smooth, then add the eggs and beat the mixture quite hard, lifting it up to get as much air in as possible. Finally, fold in the sieved flour until the mixture is smooth. To ensure the cake comes out of the tin in one piece, I buttered the tin, added a little flour and tapped it around the tin until all the butter had a layer of flour over it. Once cooked and cooled I iced the windows with a stiff butter icing. I made this with a knob of butter which I softened in the microwave, added a teaspoon of boiled water and then enough sifted icing sugar to make is stiff enough so that if I lifted the spoon I could make a letter without it disappearing. I first iced the windows in pale pink (very small amount of red colouring) and simply smoothed the icing on with a knife. I then piped around the windows in slightly darker pink, using a fairly small icing nozzle on an icing bag. I then swapped to a larger nozzle and piped the top and bottom of the carriage, and the 'mud guards'. I did a mixture of straight piping and rose piping (little 'dots'). I then iced around the windows and the tyres in plain butter icing using the small icing nozzle and making small zigzags. (I found these most useful as precision is not essential!) The undercarriage and luggage rack were then iced in pale pink, again with the small nozzle using zigzags. The very top was done in a pale yellow (I added some coloured icing from one of those tubes you can get for decorating with kids). My 10 year old daughter then made the spokes and outers for the wheels in ready coloured icing-she simply rolled out 'strings' of it then flattened/shaped as necessary. She also put 3 lilac diamonds above the windows and on the very top lemon section. As a final touch she added silver balls above the windows, on the very top and to the wheels. |
